Canberra Knights vs Adelaide Adrenaline - 15 August 2009
Canberra, ACT
It was standing room only at the Phillip Ice House as the Canberra Knights closed out their 2009 home season with a 6-1 loss against the Adelaide Adrenalin.
Canberra took to the ice looking to reward their fans but missed several goal-scoring opportunities while the Adrenalin built a 4-0 lead.
Jeremy Biernes opened the scoring for Adelaide before James Keane doubled the lead while shorthanded when he met Mike Werner's pass at Canberra's back door.
Canberra's lone tally came with 18 seconds left in the middle period when Marko Raita carried the puck through the Adelaide slot and squeezed his shot in at the near post.
Two more Adrenalin goals were nearly supplemented with another as Canberra's Ryan Lowe, who had 51 saves, smothered the puck on the goal line as players from both teams smiled at each other in what might have been a magic save.
Tempers flared slightly in the final period as the last 11 minutes of the contest was effectively played out by special teams.
Justin Mendham was given the final two minutes of the game in between Canberra's pipes and made three saves.
The win by Adelaide secures six points towards their dual for second place on the AIHL ladder.
Canberra will end the year in sixth, although pride is still on the line on season-ending visits to Newcastle and Penrith.
